Silver $15, eagles $18
Silver $16, eagles $19 Silver $17, eagles $20 You would have been happy to pay $20 a couple of weeks ago, expecting the price to go on up to $XX next year. So now spot is down $3 and still headed to $XX. What is the problem? You no longer think spot will go up? You're afraid silver is headed into a bear market? You just resent a $3 premium? You need to do some thinking about what's what and why you are investing. |

I was able to pick up 2 SAE for 16 the other day (.50 over spot) but that is not normal - they were in the generic box and marked $25 on their plastic holders but the boss said spot+.50 - sold!

Re: 2008 Silver Eagles $3.00 above spot. Good Price?
If I remember correctly, David Morgan recently stated on a podcast from www.financialsense.com that it now costs miners about $17.00 to produce/mine an ounce of silver.
So..even with a $3.00 premium etc, if you are purchasing silver for under $17.00 an ounce right now, you are making $$ imho. Anybody got a source where they can track the average price it costs for a miner to mine/produce an ounce of silver? Thanks! g |
Re: 2008 Silver Eagles $3.00 above spot. Good Price?
Premiums always matter. Even if you think it's going to $50 an ounce or whatever. If you pay too high a premium, you get less silver for your $$$... which costs you even MORE if the silver you don't have goes to $50!
Also, I don't like to buy an investment and instantly be sitting on a $3 loss. We all THINK we know what the spot price will do. But none of us really know. If you buy silver for $16 when spot is $16, great. Buying silver for $16 when spot is $13 is not the same thing. Because now spot has to go up $3 just for you to break even... instead of sitting on a $3 profit. Will premiums come back down? I think so. If silver stays around $13, sellers will start to get nervous and sell for cheap (so your dealer can turn around and sell with normal premiums), and refiners will buy 1,000 oz bars and start turning them into rounds. If silver goes back to $16... then the premiums will disappear anyway, and at least you'll be paying a fair price and not starting $3 in the hole. Now, maybe buying $16 silver with spot at $13 is better than not buying silver at all... if you eventually sell it for more than $16 somewhere down the line. But maybe being patient or searching for a good deal will turn out better still. |
